We relocated from Texas, in August of 1998, because my brother-in-law, Jack Steiger, suffered a spinal cord injury and came home an incomplete quadriplegic. [See Jack's Progress ]  My sister, Amanda Steiger, has two small children and was taking care of our elderly parents, plus a paralyzed husband. Before that, David's and my grandmother had Alzheimer. We truly understand the physical and emotional burden of being caregivers.

West Virginia has the highest rate of disabled in the nation (22%), and over 20% of its population is over 60. Jack and my mom are served by the Aged and Disabled Medicaid Waiver, a wonderful program that allows us to take care of them at home by providing helpful homemaker and chore services, rather placing them in a nursing home.

It's been hard learning what's out there that can help our family and friends who are ill. So, we formed the Aged Disabled Support Group, because we don't want other people to have to go through what we did. If we can help just one person through the process, then the time spent forming our support group and creating our website will have been worth it.

Please contact us if you need assistance taking care of someone or if you're alone and need help. If you're currently on a Medicaid Waiver Program, we would appreciate hearing any suggestions or concerns you or your family might have, or services you might need. Any personal information is kept confidential, but we do share general information, like "I wish I could have help with such and such." REMEMBER: The squeaky wheel gets oiled. If we all chime in together, we are more likely to get what we need and want!

To help us gather information about the needs of our elderly and disabled, we have a survey that can be completed by the individual, caregiver, informal support (friend, neighbor, or church member), homemaker, chore provider, Medicaid provider, or other agencies. You can complete it online at our website at www.knowareland.com - aged disabled support group. Don't have a computer at home? Visit your local library and use their Internet access. Or you can request several copies for yourself, family, and friends by contacting us at (304)765-0385 or by mail at 1410 Big Bull Run, Cedarville, WV 26611. There is no cost to join and no charge for our services.
