Hunting Leases Available for 2005!
Contact Information: Dawna or David Smith at (304)765-0385 or send us a note at huntingleases@knowareland.com
We have two properties available for lease: 89 acres and 229 acres, totaling 318 acres. They're about a mile apart. The properties are located 12 miles from Burnsville, WV, in Braxton County, in the central portion of West Virginia, only 12 miles from interstate 79. For directions to Burnsville, WV, see www.mapquest.com. There are miles of timber trails for ease of walking, and some are golf cart accessible. The properties are 85% forested primarily with oaks, hickory, walnut, poplar, and maple. Our elevation is around 1,300 feet, with small hills and many hollows, with small creeks running throughout. Due to the geographic location, quite often, when nearby ski resorts (an hour and a half from us) are getting several feet of snow, the property receives on the average only 3 to 8 inches.
Our long hunting seasons are perfect for those who like to hunt more than just one species and more than one season. We have 24 different hunting seasons in our region, including deer, turkey, grouse, squirrel, coyote, fox, raccoon, dove, rabbit, etc. Major hunting is from October 9th through December, and ending on February 28th with the end of Squirrel season, then starts up again for the spring turkey season April 25th through May 21. Not all seasons will be available for hunting. See West Virginia Season Dates and Limits.
Currently, we can only provide lodging for six people in a 31 foot camping trailer on a first come, first served basis, or a place for you to park your camping trailer. In the near future, we will have several small cabins, fully equipped as well as handicap accessible, and will be making them available on a per night, or per week basis.

Spring 2005 - For hunters, grouse, rabbit and other seasons lasts through February 28th, while Turkey season starts April 25th through May 21st. Miles of trails can be walked or ridden throughout the property. During early Spring, our leafless forest provides an excellent opportunity to view the geological formations located on the property, in addition to the beauty of blooming dogwood, redbud, crab apple, as well as the thousands of flowers in our landscaped garden. When visitors come late fall or early spring to help separate bulbs and plants, in exchange they receive a portion to take home with them. For those who have horses, we make the property available for trail riding. We have future plans for providing stable accommodations for those who wish to bring their horses during their stay.
Fall and Winter is spectacular with its color change, with hunting season starting in October, and squirrel season ending January 31st. Want to enjoy winter sports during your hunting stay, such as snow boarding, skiing, or tubing? Major ski resorts are just a couple of hours away. Or you can bring your sled, skis, and dogs with you to enjoy a fun romp in the snow. Join us during our Christmas Open House, our annual holiday celebration which is held the weekend before Christmas.
Who we are:
We're a friendly group who love the outdoors. The primary owner, Joe Goulet, is retired from the Air Force and served during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Joe used to work for Boeing and Texas Instruments, enjoys architectural drafting, and is an avid learner of the sciences. He also loves to bake, and makes wonderful Éclairs and other pastries. Visitors enjoy his baked goods, as they chat and sip coffee before the fireplaces. Our professional backgrounds include, Custom Photo Book Publishing, Computer - training, installation, and servicing, satellite and forestry products, photography, DJ and audio visual entertainment, and more.
Jack Steiger, a resident on the property, is partially paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury. Jack uses his electric cart or gasoline golf cart to travel about (see Jack's Progress). We have since learned of the many needs and services often required by the elderly and disabled, and started a group to provide needed advocacy. For more information, visit HEADINGS. We also participate in being Pet Foster Parents for abandoned dogs and cats placed with us by our local humane society, and care for these abandoned souls until loving homes are found. We gladly work with each animal we foster, to better its chances of finding a good home.
Special Note: We provide advocacy to the elderly and disabled. For more information, visit HEADINGS. We're planning on building several small cabins, fully equipped as well as handicap accessible, and will be making them available on a per night, or per week basis. During the hunting season the cabins will be available for rent to our Hunting Leaseholders on a first come first served basis. Our Hunting Leaseholders will be allowed to reserve the cabins. The cabins will have all amenities, including full kitchen, and possibly kennels for dogs and stables for horses at a later date. Our goal is to provide lodging to those who need respite, such as personal caregivers or to those who are ill or disabled and need a place to rejuvenate. Otherwise, the cabins will be available for rent.
